Le Chat Anora, Angora Cat by Marguerite Gérard (1761-1836)
Gérard was the younger sister of the wife of the celebrated artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806).
When she was 14 years old, she moved in with her sister and husband, and she started learning to paint with Fragonard.
They even made several works together (like the first and last image), and it’s not always easy to separate
to know who painted what (for works from the 1780s).

Adolf Hiremy-Hirschl "The Souls of Acheron" 1898 Hades Charon Styx Acheron Mercury
the principal figure is the god Hermes (in the winged hat and dark blue robes),
whose job it was to bring the recently deceased from the upper to the lower world,
where they went on to complete their journey across the River Acheron and into the underworld
(the oarsman Charon can be seen on the black waters in the distance, coming to ferry these wretched souls).
The dead plead with Hermes to let them return to the upper world,
but he ignores their cries as he strides through the bodies to meet Charon at the shore.
Once these souls cross the river, they will never come back.

Vanitas is closely tied to the older style of memento mori – which translates to “do not forget you shall die”-
paintings meant to inspire spectators to reflect on their impermanence. In 15th-century Europe,
memento mori began to emerge on the backs of portraits, frequently with skulls depicted inside a gap and coupled
with an admonitory saying. In the 17th century, Vanitas artworks became fashionable amongst Dutch master painters.
Famous Vanitas paintings were produced during a period of theological strife as a bastion for the Protestant goal
of contemplating the self. Casting off their Catholic Spanish masters, the Dutch Republic had emerged as a
triumphant protestant state, and Vanitas artists attempted to reflect this attitude via these Vanitas artworks.

How did Vincent van Gogh's paintings become famous? Johanna Bonger
the widow of Theo Van Gogh, Vincent’s brother and art dealer. Theo's widow, Johanna

Theo died not long after Vincent and Johanna packed up her stuff (including all the Van Gogh paintings,
around 200 of them) and moved back from Paris, where Theo had an art dealership, to Bussum in the Netherlands
where she opened a boarding house. She translated the correspondance between Vincent and Theo,
organised, together with some old friends, the first exhibitions of Vincent’s work
and actually started selling some. Not for the fortunes they catch now of course.
Those figures are only appearing in the flower power (end 60s) when Van Gogh became suddenly the bees knees.
