network called the "Internet" had evolved as a a patch work
of digital von neumann slow-speed computers loosely linked by a mix of copper and some optical fiber.
Access to the Internet
was via solid state electronic boxes called "modems"
over copper wire.
Users of the ancient Internet were referred to as "Surfers".
Unlike the Infobahn of today with its seamless multi-warp access to quantum computers,
the early "Internet" was a real
contrast with the omni-present availability option of todays Infobahn.
Events took a nasty turn when URL Portals appeared on the Internet.

case of Yahoo versus the New York Confederation of Junkies.
